Build artwork at the finished size at 300 DPI, or at 150 DPI if the poster will only be read from more than a couple of metres. Scaling a small file up is the single most common cause of a disappointing poster — the softness that is invisible on screen is obvious at A2.
Paper and finish
Coated stock gives posters their punch: gloss for photographic artwork and strong colour, matte where the poster will be read close up or lit from the front and glare matters. Heavier stock hangs flatter and curls less, which is worth it for anything staying up longer than a week.
Colour and margins
Full-colour CMYK reproduces photographs and flat brand colours well. Printster does not print borderless, so a margin is held on all sides — design a border into the artwork rather than bleeding a background to the edge, or accept a white frame around it.
Text size on a poster
A poster fails when it is designed at A4 on a screen and read at A2 across a corridor. Work out the furthest distance the poster will be read from and size the headline for that: as a rough rule, one centimetre of letter height for every three metres of viewing distance. Everything else on the poster is subordinate to that line.
