Two Pune rulebooks that disagree about the paper's second side

Savitribai Phule Pune University's PhD rules put the text on A4, printed on one side, with a margin of 1.5 inches on the left-hand side and a cover card no heavier than 330 GSM. The thesis is submitted in compact bound form with a soft copy on CD, and the final thesis is hard bound. Source unipune.ac.in, read 31 August 2026.

Symbiosis International (Deemed University) settles it the other way: white A4, and the thesis may be printed on both sides. It sets no paper weight, where the other caps the cover card, and its margins are one inch all round. Source scri.siu.edu.in, read 31 August 2026. What the spine rule states, and what it does not

For a Savitribai Phule Pune University thesis the hard-bound cover is black, and the rule describes the spine, or side cover, by what it reads: 'Ph.D. thesis' at the top, then the candidate's name and the month and year, illustrated in Appendix G. That describes wording, not how the lettering is produced, and names nothing from a printer's catalogue.

Our card sits apart from any rulebook, though Pune reaches for its hard-bound end more often than the country does: hard binding with a colour cover takes 2.8% of everything we print for Pune against 1.2% across India, on 157 items. Pune leaves less of its printing unbound than India does

Loose sheets with nothing bound take 34.1% of everything we print for Pune, against 53.9% across India. Soft cover, or perfect, binding runs the other way: 28.3% here against 11.4% nationally, about 2.5 times, on 1,596 items. Spiral takes 14.8% against 17.6%. Each is a share of printed items, one line on one order, not of the 2,289 orders.

That mix carries a calendar. Production runs 3 to 5 working days. Soft cover, hard binding, glue or tape and saddle stitch each want a further 1 to 2 working days on top; spiral, comb, wiro and staple want none. So the finish chosen on 28.3% of what we print for Pune is one of the slower ones; the finish on 14.8% is not.

A Pune paperback job averages 376 pages, a hardbound one 408

Its PhD rules put the A4 text on one side; source unipune.ac.in. Symbiosis International (Deemed University) permits both sides. On our card A4 black and white is Rs 0.85 a page single-sided against Rs 0.60 double-sided, both at the standard tier of 1 to 49 copies. We print the PDF as supplied.
Does the spine lettering on a Pune thesis have to be gold?
Nothing we hold says so. The Savitribai Phule Pune University rule sets out what the spine carries — 'Ph.D. thesis', the candidate's name, the month and year — but not how that lettering is produced.
