Seven copies, not two
This is the number to plan around, and it is higher than almost any other Indian university asks for. VTU's guideline lists four copies to the Registrar (Evaluation), one to the department, one to the concerned guide, and one to the candidate. Seven bound copies changes the economics of a thesis order: at ₹250 a copy for hard binding the binding alone is ₹1,750 before printing. Order all seven together rather than in batches — a single order prints once and binds seven, and the per-copy page rate falls at higher volumes, with A4 black and white dropping from ₹0.60 to ₹0.54 a page at 100 or more copies.
Single sided, which doubles your page count
VTU says reports should be typed neatly on one side of the paper. Most universities have moved to double-sided printing to cut bulk, so a thesis formatted for another institution's rules will have roughly half the sheets VTU expects. A 200-page thesis printed single sided is 200 sheets, not 100, which changes both the cost and the spine thickness you need to allow for. Check your export settings before you upload: if the PDF is already imposed for double-sided printing, the blank versos will print as blank sheets and the count will be wrong.
Margins in inches, and a hard bound thesis under plastic
The margins are given as left 1.25 inches, right 1 inch, top and bottom 0.75 inches — a 1.25 inch inner margin is generous, which is what you want on a thesis of this bulk. On binding, VTU says the thesis submitted to the departments and guides must be hard bound with a plastic covering, and that every copy carries an inner title page on white paper and an outer title page under a plastic cover. A4 bond paper and the 1000-word synopsis
The guideline specifies A4 bond paper, 210 by 297 mm, at 1.5 line spacing, with body text at font size 12. It also sets the internal hierarchy: chapter titles at 18, chapter numbers and section headings at 16, subsection headings at 14. Alongside the thesis every copy needs an abstract or synopsis not exceeding 1000 words and the certificate in the enclosed format, forwarded through the principal, HOD or head of the organisation where the work was carried out. The synopsis is a separate short document — it can be printed and stapled at ₹10 a copy rather than bound.
