BITS Pilani's Ph.D. guidelines are unusual among Indian universities in what they decline to specify. Where most institutions fix the margin in millimetres and the font by name, BITS says only that you may follow appropriate margins, line spacing and font. What it does fix is the physical object and the title page: five hard bound copies, an outer cover similar to the inner cover, and an annexure format for the title page that must be strictly adhered to. For a printer that is a helpful division — the layout is yours, the binding and the cover are not.

What BITS does not prescribe, and what that means for you
The guidelines say: you may follow appropriate margins, line spacing and font. That is a genuine grant of discretion, not an omission, and it is quoted in full in the specification table below. In practice it means your supervisor and your department's house style decide the layout, and a printer cannot tell you that your margins are wrong. What it does not mean is that margins do not matter physically: a bound thesis still loses inner margin to the spine, so allow at least 30 to 35 mm on the binding edge whatever your department prefers. Five hard bound copies, plus six synopses
The submission bundle is specific even where the layout is not: five hard bound copies of the thesis, soft copies of the thesis and synopsis in a single PDF on a CD, and six copies of the synopsis. That is five bound volumes and six short documents, which are two different print jobs. Hard binding is ₹250 a copy, so five copies is ₹1,250 of binding before printing. The six synopses are short and do not need binding — corner stapling is ₹2 a copy and centre staple binding ₹30, either of which suits a synopsis of a few dozen pages.
The outer cover has to match the inner cover
The guidelines say the thesis should have an outer cover similar to the inner cover, and that the formats of the thesis title page and certificates given in the annexure should be strictly adhered to. The annexure sets a centred sequence: the title, then THESIS, then the phrase submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of, the degree in uppercase, by, the candidate's name and ID number, Under the Supervision of and the supervisor's name, then BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI and the year. Send the cover artwork or the exact text and it is set to match the inner page.
Single sided until 350 pages, then both sides
BITS gives a page-count rule rather than a blanket instruction. The thesis may be word-processed on a single side of the paper, but where the number of pages exceeds 350, it may be printed on both sides. Good quality A4 in portrait orientation, with the text justified; the paper weight is not specified, so Printster's standard 75 gsm is appropriate unless your supervisor asks otherwise. If your thesis is near the 350-page line, decide before you upload — switching from single to double sided halves the sheet count and changes the spine thickness.
