Build artwork at the finished size at 300 DPI, or at 150 DPI if the poster will only be read from more than a couple of metres. Scaling a small file up is the single most common cause of a disappointing poster — the softness that is invisible on screen is obvious at A2.
Paper and finish
Coated stock gives posters their punch: gloss for photographic artwork and strong colour, matte where the poster will be read close up or lit from the front and glare matters. Heavier stock hangs flatter and curls less, which is worth it for anything staying up longer than a week.
