What a print run actually costs

The printing scales and the binding does not. A 200-page A5 novel is Rs 76 of printing at Rs 0.38 a page, or Rs 68 at Rs 0.34 on 100 copies or more, plus Rs 110 a copy for perfect binding. A hundred copies of that book is roughly Rs 17,800 before GST and delivery. The calculator gives the exact figure against your own page count. Preparing the interior

One PDF, fonts embedded, images at 300 DPI, page size consistent from first page to last. Set a mirrored gutter of at least 15 mm on the inside edge for perfect binding, or the text runs into the spine. Check that blank versos fall where you intended, because a missing blank shifts every page after it from recto to verso. Proof one copy before the run

Order a single copy from the final PDF and read it in your hand: the gutter, the running heads, the spine, the image pages, the last page. It costs a few hundred rupees and it is the only reliable check on a run of hundreds. Almost every fault that ruins a print run is visible in the first copy.
