Brochure Design Tips for Printing

To set up a brochure file for printing, design at the correct folded panel dimensions with 3 mm bleed on all sides, use CMYK colours, embed all fonts, keep text 4–5 mm from fold lines, and export as a PDF with 300 DPI images. For a tri-fold A4 brochure, each panel is 99 mm wide — not 100 mm, because the innermost fold panel is slightly narrower.

A brochure is one of the most versatile marketing tools for Indian businesses — it works at trade shows, retail counters, school open days, and inside courier packages. But more brochures are ruined at the design stage than at the print stage. Common problems include text running into fold lines, images that look sharp on screen but blurry in print, or white edges on what should be a full-bleed background. Getting the file setup right before you hit print takes a bit of care, but it is not complicated once you know the rules. This guide covers the specifics for the two most common brochure types — bi-fold (half-fold) A4 and tri-fold A4 — along with paper and finishing advice that will help your brochure make the right impression. Once your file is ready, uploading to an online printer like Printster and ordering with delivery anywhere in India is straightforward.

Choosing Your Brochure Format

The two most common formats are:

Other formats (Z-fold, gate-fold, accordion fold) are available from specialist printers for larger runs.

Image Resolution and Colour Mode

All images must be 300 DPI at the final print size. A photo that fills a panel must be 300 DPI at 100 mm × 210 mm — not at thumbnail size. Many stock photos from websites are 72–96 DPI and will print noticeably blurry.

Work in CMYK from the start. Convert any RGB images before placing them. Vibrant screen colours (particularly electric blue, neon green, and deep red) will look less saturated in CMYK — adjust saturation and lightness to compensate.

Paper and Finishing for Brochures

Exporting Your Print-Ready PDF

Use 'PDF/X-1a' or 'PDF (Print)' export settings. Ensure fonts are embedded and images are not downsampled below 300 DPI. Include crop marks and bleed in the export options. Avoid exporting as 'Smallest file size' — this compresses images aggressively and reduces print quality.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the inner panel of a tri-fold brochure narrower than the other panels?
The inner panel folds inward and must tuck inside the two outer panels when closed. If it is the same width, it buckles or creates a visible gap. Make the inner panel 1–2 mm shorter (e.g., 98 mm vs 99 mm for standard A4 tri-fold) so it fits neatly.
What bleed size should a brochure have?
Use 3 mm bleed on all outer edges. This means background colours and images extend 3 mm beyond the trim line on each side, so there are no white edges if the cut is slightly off. Fold lines do not require bleed.
What paper weight is best for a tri-fold marketing brochure?
130 GSM art paper folds cleanly and is cost-effective for larger runs. 170 GSM feels more substantial and professional. Go above 200 GSM only if you plan to score the brochure before folding, as thicker paper will crack otherwise.
Can I upload a Canva-designed brochure for printing?
Yes. Export from Canva as PDF (Print) with the Bleed toggle enabled. Canva does not support CMYK natively (it uses RGB), so be aware some colours may shift slightly in print — particularly vivid blues, reds, and greens. Check a proof if colour accuracy is critical.
Should I choose matte or glossy lamination for a brochure?
Matte lamination is better for text-heavy brochures and formal brand contexts — it is easier to read and photograph. Glossy lamination suits real estate listings, product catalogues, and vibrant photographic designs where colour impact is the priority.
How do I order brochure printing on Printster?
Upload your flat, print-ready PDF to Printster, select the paper weight and any lamination, choose your quantity, and use the price calculator. Delivery to Delhi NCR takes 4–7 working days; rest of India 7–10 working days from the next working day. Payment is online via card, UPI, or net banking.
